remember, there were protests about those videos so they looked at the protests in cairo and assumed it was something similar. i would imagine petraeus will testify something to that effect. i doubt very much he'll say well, i knew this all along and you know, susan rice went out there and said something completely contradictory. my guess is there were two schools of thought or two sets of evidence in the administration from the start. the video and al qaeda -- >> i think what he says is he had to then rule out the 20 different intelligence reports they received or more which indicated it could have been the video. he had to rule that out before they could give a clear view. we will leave it there. thank you very much indeed. good to see you. >> as always, pleasure. >>> next, governor romney blasts president obama's victory saying he won because of gifts he promised to minority groups. >>> what the president -- president's campaign did is focus on certain members of his base coalition, give them extraordinary financial gifts from the government and then work very aggressively to turn

cairo, as you know, there was a violent protest that was undertaken in reaction to this very offensive video that was disseminated. >> reporter: rice is now a leading candidate to replace hillary clinton as secretary of state. top republicans led by senators john mccain and lindsey graham, they vowed to block her nomination. >> i don't trust her. and the reason i don't trust her is because i think she knew better and if she didn't know better, she shouldn't be the voice of america. >> reporter: today, an obama smackdown. >> if senator mccain and senator graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me. and should i choose, if i think that she would be the best person to serve america, in the capacity of the state department, then i will nominate her. >> reporter: but wait. isn't this supposed to be a moment for bipartisanship? as the country approaches the fiscal cliff at the end of the year, unless washington can do a deal, what kind of leadership will the newly emboldened barack obama bring to those old bitter debates? >> so, i will, you know, examine ways that i

joining me from cairo, nbc news correspondent jim maceda. jim, explain to all of us the reaction to secretary clinton's visit to the region and the impact that her presence has brought to the negotiations for a cease-fire. >> reporter: first, the reaction has been one of anxiety, anticipation, and of deep hope that secretary of state hillary clinton can now broker or help to broke err deal. they certainly don't want war right next door. many are asking where america has been for these past eight or so years. i think the overall feeling is one of anticipation, that something hopefully now can move forward. in terms of her impact today, she's met already with president morsi. she's also wrapping up a meeting with the foreign minister and we understand at the press conference she's supposed to give has not started yet. but i can guarantee you that many people here in egypt and israel are intent on following that press conference. unlike yesterday, there have been no dramatic statements that a cease-fire will be declared at such and such a time.

now susan rice says this began as a spontaneous, not premeditated response to what happened in cairo. i don't think her language was very careful. that's why they pounced on that language. i think things were slightly settled down today because you heard from dave petraeus because he said she was giving these talking points. i don't think it's settled down completely. i think you'll probably still see john mccain and lindsey graham. >> do you think she'll be secretary of state? >> i don't know. i don't know whether she'll be nominated. that is one of the things that president obama said yesterday. he said he hadn't decided. gwen: how about is this whether she was getting a nomination or how much of not letting him tell -- >> i can nominate anyone i want to. if i want to nominate susan rice, i will. but he certainly hasn't done that right, not put in stone, so we can't do that yet. i think certainly, i have seen a couple of very negative articles in the past 24 hours, too, about her. it sort of seems there is an effort to undermine that nomination. gwen: let's not forget the big story
